A new week, and a new study subject to paint in the Magma Classroom LIVE stream. Building on the painting fundamentals that we covered in previous sessions, we turned our attention to some some polished stone skulls.
The Magma Classroom, hosted by artist, Ryan Allan, is a space where we can sharpen our skills, and revisit core principles. The goal is not to produce perfect paintings, but rather to step a little bit out of our comfort zones by painting something we haven’t tried before within a limited time.
This subject was suggested by one of our regular Classroom attendees and it sure was a fun one. The two stones for the skulls were red jasper and turquoise.
Shout out to our participants: DPO, Eyebrowl, Everesce, Shian.Kiku and Chii, Klondice and Radek.

Before diving into painting our subject, we always take a moment to assess what where’s looking at and what we might need to keep in mind as we work on it.
First, the skulls have a very clean silhouette;
There are some rough texture markings that add variety to the smooth surface;
the objects are well polished, which leads to sharper highlights;
The skulls rest on a reflective black counter which still catches some color on it.

It was great to see different approaches and some fun being had with these sessions. Even after the stream ended, some folks stuck around to do some cute drawings on their canvas. DPO dropped a Skeletor for his turquoise one, a little red Terminator eye appears in Everesce’s, Eyebrowl put the lasso fill patterns to use, while Shian.Kiku and Chii drew some little comic characters interacting with eachother.
The Magma Classroom LIVE session with Ryan take place each week:
