Still life painting is a great for practising your fundamentals, as discussed in our last round-up of the Magma Classroom LIVE series.

For more experienced painters, they also give an opportunity to refine your understanding of light and texture with different types of objects and lighting scenarios.

We’re now doing two weekly streams at different time slots for our users that are spread out across the globe. Each session has a new reference image to study. Here’s a brief look at our last two Magma Classroom sessions with artist, Ryan “Eyekoo” Allan.

Classroom Session - April 27 - Painting Fabric Folds

Our focus in this session was fabric folds. Similar to our approach with landscapes, we first looked at the types of shapes being created. Even though we might not fully understand how the fabric behaves depending on the weight and points of tension in the beginning, focusing on the shapes will be enough for us to get a good representation of our subject.

Shoutout to our participants in this session: Nexus, Everesce, Eyebrowl, Adinaa, and fellow Magma teammate, Radek.

Classroom Session - May 11 - Still Life with fabric

In this session of the Classroom, we tackled another still life. This time, fabric was a part of the collection of objects in the scene. This gave us the opportunity to put into practice what we covered last time.

To start our study, we first lay down the textural background. It would be more difficult to get that texture and variation of color down later if you’re only working on one layer.

Thank you to MountainPirate, Radek, Adinaa and Eyebrowl for joining this one. We appreciate that we have a core group of regular attendees for these sessions. Some are even staying awake until ridiculous hours to join.

The Magma Classroom LIVE session with Ryan take place each week:

  • Monday 12pm Central Europe Time

  • Thursday 10am Central Daylight Time

Stay tuned about upcoming sessions by subscribing to our YouTube channel and catch up on past Classroom streams.
