A new week with some new references for us to sharpen our digital painting skills in the Magma Classroom LIVE sessions. We covered many of the painting fundamentals already in past sessions and now we. For this one-hour study session, we chose to do kintsugi objects.
Shout out to our participants for these sessions: Eyebrowl, Radek, TwoMuchPoko, QuackersCrackers, 0.000001% Gay, Mountain Pirate, Nanodox, and _Lilmarimo.
We’ve had some younger friends joining us in these sessions, and it was great to see them putting themselves out there and not being shy to tackle the reference. Great job by everyone on these.

As always, we begin by blocking in the background, and then the overall shape of our object.
It’s helpful with a subject like this to keep the metal separate from the ceramic to easily add color and texture.
So we blocked in the shape of our metal over the pot on a separate layer, then created a new layer and clipped that to our metal shape.
After this, we can take a big brush to add in variation of color and change the values to match the light over our object. Using a bigger brush means we can get the interesting elements of the brush shape to appear more clearly to add texture.
In our next lessons we’ll explore metal surfaces a bit more.
