Another week and another subject to study as we sharpen our digital painting skills in the Magma Classroom. We’ve already covered the fundamentals of painting in our first set of live streams, which we continue to call back to as we find new reference to study.
This week, one of our participants suggested mushrooms. This is a really fun subject to study because of all the variety of mushrooms and how they they change.
Shoutout to our participants for these sessions: Eyebrowl, Nexus, Meowformoney, Everesce, Radek, Icedcherry!!!, Rain Dreamer, and Klondice. It’s been great to have some new people joining us this week.

Mushrooms have a lot of interesting textures to them, especially in these reference images. To capture that, as always, we must start with laying down our basic shapes.
Keeping the overall mushroom shape on a separate layer will make texturing a little bit easier later.
With a new layer clipped to the mushroom shape layer below, we can use a bigger brush to add in texture and softer transitions.
With the liquid droplets, light passes through them which often causes a lighter value on the opposite side of it to where our light source is.
Overall, this was a challenging one for the one hour allocated for the session, but a point that I keep stressing is that the intention with these sessions is not highly rendered paintings, but rather taking the time to make decisions that bring us closer to our reference image. This is a training ground.
