A new week and so a new subject for us to study in the Magma Classroom LIVE painting sessions. This time we build on our digital painting fundamentals and the kintsugi objects that we looked at last time by trying to paint some shiny metal helmets.
Shout out to Eyebrowl, Nexus, Rapid, Shian Kiku,Radek, Alyx, DPO, and Lilmarimo for joining and putting the time into their study.

Here are some things we considered while painting our metal helmet studies:
The metal is not a single color. Apart from just the change in color due to the lighting direction, there is also a lot of variety in saturation and temperature across the whole surface;
Objects that are more than just primitive geometric forms will often have a lot of light bouncing around into shadows, depending on the lighting scenario;
Polished metal is very reflective and will have sharper highlights;
Start by creating a silhouette, and with a clipped layer above it, add big strokes of color with a slightly textured brush to more quickly get the variety. You can smooth this out in areas later;
You can also add some color dynamics. such as hue jitter, to your brush for color and texture variety.

This was a tricky subject for the 1 hour we allocated for the study but the idea is not to get perfectly finished paintings in that time. It’s great to see some spending more time though and experimenting a bit. Great effort by everyone.
