Wolf drawings by real artists
There's no one right way to draw a wolf. Here are 25 ways artists on Magma drew theirs, and how you can learn from them.
The realistic way
Work from a reference and build the coat out of many short strokes and shades instead of outlines. A grey wolf is never just grey: these artists painted cream, brown, white and black into the fur.

Grey fur is many colors
The wolf portrait (#37) is built from short strokes laid the way the fur grows: dark grey on the forehead and around the eyes, cream on the cheeks, white on the muzzle and the thick ruff. It sits on a bright purple square.

Detail where it counts
The fur on the wolf's face (#97) is made of single short strokes of white, brown and black, while the peach flowers around it are flat and simple. The detailed fur and the blue eyes stand out against them.

The howling, moonlit way
The most drawn wolf of all: head up, snout to the sky, a moon behind. The pose does most of the work, so a silhouette or a quick sketch is enough.

One shape against the moon
The howling wolf (#82) is a single black shape on a pale full moon: snout pointing up, chest forward, tail hanging down. No face and no fur, and it still reads at once.

Tip the head all the way back
In (#121) the wolf's head points straight up at a small moon, the mouth open, with a trail of sparkles above it. The rest is long, pale fur falling down the neck and chest.

The cartoon and stylized way
Simplify and exaggerate: big eyes, a big grin, flat colors, bold shapes. Keep the pointed ears, the ruff and the bushy tail, and the drawing still says wolf.

Push the expression
The grinning wolf (#88) has a huge open mouth, big teal eyes and spiky fur on the cheeks and chest. Next to it is a much simpler sketch of the same black-and-white markings.

A few flat colors
The leaping wolf (#119) uses only flat greys and white, with a grey scarf flying behind. Front and back legs stretched out make it look fast.

The fantasy way
Keep what makes it read as a wolf (the long snout, the ruff, the bushy tail) and change the rest: its color, its markings, what it's made of.

Keep the shape, change the surface
The spirit wolf (#51) has an ordinary wolf shape, with pointed ears, a thick ruff and a bushy tail, but it's deep purple and covered in glowing teal swirls and flowers. The palette sits in a strip of swatches beside it.

One design, three views
The lunar wolf (#103) is drawn as a snarling head, a calm front view and a small full-body pose, each with the same blue markings and gold gem on the forehead.

The sketched way
A few lines can be enough. Studies and quick sketches are how most artists learn the wolf's long legs and deep chest, and you can stop whenever it already looks right.

Learn what's under the fur
The wolf studies (#3) put a labeled skeleton, a skull and several walking and running poses on one page, each pose as simple colored shapes. The artist's own caption: "these were a blast".

Leave the guides in
The wolf head (#139) still shows its construction: a circle for the skull, a line down the middle and a line across for the eyes, with the fluffy neck ruff drawn around it.

Long legs, one fluffy ruff
The line sketch (#47) is only a few clean lines: long thin legs, a narrow body, a long tail held out straight and one fluffy shape around the neck.

How to draw a wolf: learn it with others
The fastest way to get better at wolves is to draw them next to other people. In an Art Jam, everyone draws on one shared canvas at the same time, so you can watch how others handle the fur, the ruff and the long legs.
Join an animal jam and ask the artists how they did it. Or host your own: pick a wolf photo as a reference, share the link, and compare what everyone makes of it.

Prefer steps? A quick guide
The basic shapes behind a standing wolf. Once they're down, pick a way from above and make it yours.
- Circle and long snoutLightly sketch a circle for the head and attach a long, tapering snout, about as long as the skull, with an almost straight line from forehead to nose.
- Deep, narrow chestLeave room for a thick neck, then draw a deep oval for the chest and a smaller one for the hips about two heads behind it. Join them with the back line.
- Long legsThe legs are about as long as the chest is deep. Front legs come straight down, close together; back legs bend backwards at the hock like a 'Z'. Big oval paws.
- Small ears, low tailTwo short triangular ears with rounded tips, small for the head. A straight, bushy tail that hangs low, not curled over the back.
- Face and ruffAlmond eyes slanting up toward the ears, a dark nose at the tip, a long mouth line. Then a thick ruff of jagged fur around the cheeks and neck.
- Outline, fur and colorDraw one outline over the shapes, erase the guides, add fur strokes on the back, chest and tail, then color: a grey wolf is grey, tan, cream and black.

Draw a wolf nowQuestions
How do you draw a wolf?
There's no single right way. Start with simple shapes (a circle and a long snout for the head, a deep chest, long legs, small ears and a bushy tail held low), then pick a style: realistic, howling at the moon, cartoon, fantasy or a quick sketch. The easiest way to improve is to draw alongside others in an Art Jam and see how they do it.
How is drawing a wolf different from drawing a dog?
A wolf has longer legs, a narrower chest, a thick ruff of fur around the neck, smaller ears for the size of its head, almond eyes and a straight, bushy tail held low. Change those and a dog drawing turns into a wolf.
How do I draw a howling wolf?
Point the snout straight up, open the mouth into a small round shape and let the neck ruff stretch up with the head. A full moon behind it makes the pose read at once: the silhouette on this page is just one black shape.
