Fox drawings by real artists
There's no one right way to draw a fox. Here are 32 ways artists on Magma drew theirs, and how you can learn from them.
The realistic way
Work from a reference and build the fur out of many shades: orange on top, cream and white underneath, dark brown and black at the ears and legs.

The white ruff frames the face
In the red fox portrait (#6) the white fur starts at the cheeks and spreads down the chest, painted in fine strokes over a grey shadow. The orange stays on the forehead, the snout and the shoulders.

Light on the fur
The fox with its eyes shut (#38) is lit from above: pale cream along the top of the head and snout, warm orange on the cheeks and greyish shadow under the chin. Long, thin whiskers go on last.

The cute way
Make the head big and round, the snout short and the eyes large, and let the tail get even fluffier. Soft colors and a sleepy or happy face do the rest.

Cute comes from proportions
The cream fox (#40) has a head almost as wide as its body, big orange eyes set low, and short legs tucked together. Only the ears and the tail tip get the stronger orange.

The cartoon and stylized way
Simplify the fox into shapes: triangles for the ears and snout, a bean for the body, a big curve for the tail. A fox still reads as a fox with very little detail.

A fox in a few flat shapes
The fox on the purple hill (#116) is just a pointed head, a rounded body, four thin dark legs and a tail with a cream tip, all in flat color with no fur detail.

Same fox, three poses
In the polka-dot piece (#51) the artist draws blocky, angular foxes sitting, standing and leaping, which is a good way to practise how the body and tail change shape in each pose.

The fantasy way
Keep the pointed ears, the narrow snout and the bushy tail, then change the rest: many tails like a kitsune from Japanese folklore, wings, glowing fur or a tail with a mind of its own.

Nine tails
The purple fox (#17) has nine long tails fanning out behind it, much bigger than its body, so they read first. Golden ornaments wrap around the tails and legs.

Change one part
The fox in the "Draw a fox" jam (#104) is an ordinary brown fox from the nose to the hips. Only the tail is strange: it opens into a mouth full of teeth.

The sketched way
Quick studies are how most artists learn an animal. Draw the same fox in several poses, or catch one in a few loose strokes.

Studying poses
The fennec studies (#107) show five poses on one page: standing, walking, sniffing the ground, a close-up of the head and one curled up. The huge ears are the first thing drawn in each.

How to draw a fox: learn it with others
The fastest way to get better at foxes is to draw them next to other people. 4 of the 32 drawings on this page were made in Art Jams: shared canvases where everyone draws at the same time.
In the "Draw a fox" jam, 17 artists drew foxes side by side on one canvas: sketches, cartoons, cute ones and the toothy-tailed fox further up. Join a fox jam, watch how others handle the ears, snout and tail, or start your own and share the link.

Draw a fox nowQuestions
How do you draw a fox?
There's no single right way. Start with simple shapes (a small circle for the head, a narrow pointed snout, two big triangle ears, a slim body and a big bushy tail), then pick a style: realistic, cute, cartoon, fantasy or a quick sketch. The easiest way to improve is to draw alongside others in a fox Art Jam and see how they do it.
How do I draw a cute fox?
Make the head big and round, the snout short and the eyes large and low on the face. Keep the legs short and the tail extra fluffy. The round cream fox and the fox in the flower meadow on this page are good examples.
How do you draw a kitsune or a fox with many tails?
Draw the fox first, then fan several long tails out from the same point at its hips, making them bigger than the body so they read first. The purple nine-tailed fox on this page shows how.
