AI Art Manifesto

AI Art Manifesto

Even though Magma has explored generative AI art tools, we have decided not to pursue them until the fundamental challenges affecting artists' livelihoods are addressed.

We want to clarify that any AI art tools we tested were never publicly released, and we never charged anyone or made a profit from them.

Magma is all about the human experience and collaboration. We believe that the joy of creating art is just as important, if not more important, than the final result.

In today's world, many companies feel pressured to integrate AI. Magma was no different. But after careful consideration, we believe that current generative AI art tools need more work to be truly beneficial for the art community. We encourage other art platforms to think carefully about using AI.

We stand to be a voice for our users, championing their rights as AI evolves and becomes more standard in our industry. We will not make AI a part of the Magma platform — and discourage other art platforms from doing so — unless we can all confidently abide by these principles:

  1. Artworks generated by AI should be transparent about their origins and the extent to which other art was utilized.

  • Artists who have devoted years into developing their skills and individual style made generative AI possible, and they deserve recognition.

  • AI developers should offer clear and visible information for its users to identify where user inputs are collected, and how they’re being used. This aspect of transparency is imperative for establishing a trustworthy, safe, and ethical space for creators.

  1. Credit should be given to the original creator when creating artworks heavily inspired by a specific artist, style or company. It is unfair to copy someone’s style and claim it as one’s own; AI systems must prevent this from happening.

  2. AI tools should help artists thrive, not take their livelihood away. It’s important to make sure that in the ever-changing landscape of generative AI there are ways for artists to find business opportunities and continue doing what they love.

  3. Companies building AI tools must be ethically responsible in their products and with their audiences.

  • AI systems developers need to make a genuine effort to educate their users on how to use their tools responsibly and how to find ways to promote ethical practices.

  • As AI integrations become more commonplace for creative design tools, we feel strongly that it is imperative for developers to consider the impacts being made to the creative communities at large, and if need be, be willing to take a stand and adapt or forgo unethical AI models.

  1. The industry must monitor the impact of new tools in terms of both positive and negative effects. We believe that it’s our responsibility to build art tools, which ultimately make us smarter and more skilled - contributing to a happier and better society.

We're committed to serving the art community and we thank everyone for their thoughts and continued support.
